June 27, 2024 GRAND RAPIDS, MI – After serving six months in an interim role, the board of directors is thrilled to introduce Lisa Mathews as the new CEO for 70×7 Life Recovery (70×7), effective May 2024. “During her short time with 70×7, Lisa has proven that she has the vision and the required skill needed to guide 70×7 into its next season of impact,” said board chair, Gary Veurink.
Mathews comes to this position with a passion for the work and significant experience in the faith-based nonprofit sector. She is a pastor and former CEO of Love Your Neighbor in Hudsonville. She has spent the last several years consulting with nonprofit leaders to bring spiritual and social flourishing to their communities. Mathews said, “I have a passion for leadership development, strategic planning, team building and seeing those around me empowered to utilize their God-given gifts to their fullest potential.”
Through offices located in Grand Rapids and Holland, 70×7 walks alongside people who are returning to society after incarceration, supporting them as they build a new foundation and find life success. 70×7 changes the trajectory for men and women released from incarceration. They teach practical skills for jobs, for relationships, and for life.
Mathews believes that her past experiences will serve her well in this new role. “I’m passionate about creating an ecosystem in which faithful followers of Christ can reach those who are hurting and/or far from community,” she said.
70×7’s services save taxpayers millions each year. It costs approximately $35,000 per year to house and feed one Michigan inmate. That investment yields a 30% recidivism rate. In contrast, 70×7’s life-changing mentorship and support programs require an investment of roughly $5,000 per person. Less than 4% of program participants return to jail or prison. In the last year, 70×7 served approximately 500 people and saved Michigan taxpayers nearly $10 million.
However, this work is about far more than money. “I’m most excited about how we can dream together to support those returning to society from prison,” Mathews concluded. “I imagine the generational impact this will make, and I am humbled by the opportunity to serve in this tangible way.”
